The Purpose of Darkness and Light
Purposes of Darkness and Light
This week, while I was working out, I struck up a conversation with one of the trainers, who also is a professional wrestler. I ‘m not sure just how we got into the conversation, but at one point he stated he prefers being the bad guy. He sees this role as being needed to facilitate making the good guys look better.
I told him that the way he portrays himself in the ring is a prime example of evil and good, darkness and light, and godlessness and godliness in the world.
Where light shines it exposes sin and wherever the darkness is the greatest it makes the light more evident.
John 1:3-5 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood
it.
When did it all start and what is the source of light and darkness?
Genesis 1:1-5 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was
formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
2 Samuel 22:29 You are my lamp, O LORD; the LORD turns my darkness into light.
Psalm 104:2 He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent.
Job 38:19 "What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside?
1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
1 Timothy 6:15-16 ...—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
What is the function of light and darkness?
Darkness represents death and sin while light gives evidence of all qualities of death and sin as well as light and godliness.
Job 34:22 There is no dark place, no deep shadow, where evildoers can hide.
2 Peter 1:19-21 And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Psalm 4:6 Many are asking, "Who can show us any good?" Let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD.
19:8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
56:13 For you have delivered me
from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
76:4
You are resplendent with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game.
119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
119:130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
Isaiah 9:2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned. (Also Matthew 4:16)
49:6 he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."
What should we do?
Isaiah 2:5 Come, O house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.
Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness,"
made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all
sin.
Where do you reside?
John 3:19-21 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
Where do you have fellowship?
2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
What do your actions tell about you?
Ephesians 5:8-14 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10and find out what pleases the Lord. 11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
Are you living like chosen people?
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
What is the evidence of the absence of light in our lives?
1 John 2:9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.
2 Corinthians 11:13-14 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
What is the finality of life lived in darkness?
Revelation 20:12-15 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
What is the finality of life lived in the light?
Revelation 21:23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.
Conclusion:
Where do you want to end up at the end of life.
Where you walk and how you walk will make a difference.
If you have not received the pardon for sin that was paid by Jesus Christ our LORD, you are still walking in the darkness. You can accept your pardon today and start walking in the light of the glory of God.
